Junior forward Deanna Jackson, Conference USA's pre-season player of the year, got off to a good start in earning that honor at the end of the year as she was named the league's first player of the week for the 2000-01 season.
Jackson, from Brewton, Ala., averaged 31.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in being named to the Nevada Bell Classic All-Tournament team. She scored 29 points and pulled down 18 points in the opener against host Nevada, a 79-63 winner. She followed that up with 33 points and 11 rebounds in the Lady Blazers 90-70 win over Idaho.
Jackson hit 19-of-34 shots, 56 percent, from the field. She also made 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 20-of-26 free throws, 77 percent.
The Lady Blazers are 1-1 on the season and host Kansas in the Lady Blazer Classic, Saturday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. in Bartow Arena. Tennessee-Martin and Louisiana-Monroe play the first game at 2:30 p.m. Sunday Kansas will play the 2:00 game and UAB at 4:00.
