BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- UAB women's basketball head coach Jeannie Milling announced on Wednesday that Brittany Smith has signed a letter of intent to play for the Blazers next season. The 5-8 combo guard from St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay, New York, Smith is the 2001-02 Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Player of the Year and a Newsday first-team All-Long Island player.

"Brittany is a talented, athletic guard with speed and quickness," said Milling. "She is an experienced ball handler who can pull up and shoot the jumper as well as hit the '3' with consistency. She will primarily play the 2 guard in our program. We expect her to make our guard rotation very strong and bring more balance to our inside/outside game."

Smith averaged 19.2 points and 8.1 rebounds in 27 games as a junior. Smith shot 55.8 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 66.2 percent from the free-throw line. Smith has 1,018 career points, the first 240 coming her freshman year at Uniondale High.

Smith is the first signee for the Lady Blazers during the current signing period.

Smith's High School Awards: 2002 NSCHSGAA League Player of the Year; 2002 All-Long Island team (Newsday); 2001 Second-team All-Long Island team (Newsday); 2001 & 2002 Team MVP; 2000 All-Nassau County; Member of Long Island Wave (13-year-old AAU National Champion team)
