BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB women’s basketball player Kayla Anderson has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The Hoover, Ala., native scored 13 points in her Blazer debut against Austin Peay State last Friday. Anderson scored seven points in the first six minutes and went 2-for-2 in the first half against the Lady Governors, propelling her team to the 72-54 win.
Anderson shot .714 (5-for-7) from the field and .600 (3-for-5) from the free-throw line in her team’s first season-opening victory since the 2009-10 season.
The 6-foot-1 forward came to UAB from Hoover High School, where she helped her team to two state championships, averaging eight points and eight rebounds per contest. Playing for head coach Donnie Quinn, Anderson led her team in blocked shots in both her junior and senior seasons.
UAB faces Alabama A&M Monday at 6 p.m. CT, before heading to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.
