BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team begins its 2009-10 campaign on Friday at noon (CT), hosting the Alcorn State Lady Braves at Bartow Arena. The Blazers are seeking their 250th win at home in addition to a season-opening victory for the second straight year.

Friday's meeting marks the second between the two teams, as UAB defeated Alcorn State, 59-49, in a 2003 contest. Overall, the Blazers are 20-11 in home openers and 13-18 in season-opening contests.

UAB is coming off a 92-50 win over Augusta State in its lone exhibition contest last Sunday. Freshman guard Jala Harris led the way with 20 points, while freshman center Jasmine Green contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.

Harris and Green are among eight fresh faces on this year's squad. The newcomers join eight returning letterwinners, including last year's top scorer in junior guard Amanda Peterson. With a blend of experience and talent, sixth-year head coach Audra Smith has her team poised to build upon last season's 10-20 finish.

UAB welcomes its employees to the game for free with their employee ID and the first 200 UAB employees will enjoy a free lunch. Additionally, elementary school students from the area will join the Blazers for Conference USA's the Classroom on the Court program, encouraging students to learn about the history and geography of the conference while enjoying a free basketball game and lunch.
