BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will open the 2013-14 season at the Emerald Beach Islanders Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Blazers will play their first game on Friday, Nov. 8 against Fairfield at 2 p.m. CT, and then will face Western Illinois or Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday.
UAB will face Fairfield in the first game of the tournament on Friday afternoon. It will be the first time that the Blazers and the Stags have ever met on the court. Fairfield finished 18-14 last season and returns four of its five starters, including All-MAC selections Katie Cizynski and Brittany Obi-Tabot.
Blazers Win Exhibitions
The Blazers recorded wins in both their exhibition games in preparation for the 2013-14 season. They defeated Georgia Southwestern, 86-40, and West Florida, 61-46. The 86 points that UAB put up against GSW was more than the team scored in any game during the 2012-13 season.
Two All-Conference USA Returners
The Blazers bring back to All-C-USA selections in seniors Karisma Chapman and Ashley Grimes. Each averaged double-digits last season, as Chapman led the team with 13.5 ppg and Grimes added 11.9 ppg. UAB is the only current team in Conference USA to return to all-conference players.
Newcomers Look To Make Impact
Freshman Janeka Williams scored 16 points in both exhibition games for the Blazers. Against Georgia Southwestern, junior Miranda Burroughs buried three 3-pointers to tally nine points in the win and freshman Kasey Drayton hit a three at the halftime buzzer to give UAB a 43-20 lead.
Four-Straight Winning Seasons
UAB will look to extend its streak of winning seasons to five after finishing 18-13 in the 2012-13 season. Since 2009, the Blazers have amassed 74 wins and claimed a Women's Basketball Invitational Championship in the 2010-11 season.
