Haase, who is entering his first season with the Blazers, welcomes back seven letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team that finished fifth in the C-USA standings. Junior guard Jordan Swing is the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 11.2 points per game in 2011-12. The Birmingham, Ala., native also led the team in three-point shooting (38.7 percent) and free throw shooting (84.5 percent). In all, UAB brings back its top three shooters from beyond the arc and six of the top eight scorers from last season's squad.
After compiling a 19-11 (9-7 C-USA) record and third-place finish the league last year, the UAB women will have a new look this season, as the squad returns just three starters and welcomes eight newcomers to the squad.
In the recently released Preseason Conference USA Coaches’ Poll, the Blazers were predicted to finish third in the C-USA, as voted on by the league head coaches. UAB has set school and Conference USA records for scoring defense in each of the past two seasons, allowing 55.3 points per game in 2010-11 and a remarkable 49.1 points per contest in 2011-12. Last year's scoring defense mark ranked third in the nation, behind only Connecticut and Hampton.
The women’s squad will open their 2012-13 campaign with a two-game exhibition slate when they host Brewton-Parker on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. CT before welcoming UAH on Nov. 5 for a 7 p.m. CT tipoff. UAB will open regular season play on Nov. 9 at home against Austin Peay at Noon CT.
