Head coach Audra Smith and her staff released the 2012-13 schedule Wednesday
Sept. 26, 2012
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's basketball team announced its 2012-13 schedule on Wednesday, which includes two games against teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament and six games against 2012 NIT participants.
“It was a big key for us to make our schedule competitive with opponents who advanced to the postseason last season,” head coach Audra Smith said. “There are a lot of great teams with great coaches on this schedule, and playing teams of that nature only helps us get better. You want to play the best teams out there and put yourself in a position for postseason play as well.”
In addition to their Conference USA lineup, the Blazers will take on teams from six other conferences, including the Ohio Valley Conference, Southwestern Athletic Conference, Southeastern Conference, Big South Conference, Colonial Athletic Association and Southern Conference.
“I’m looking forward to playing our non-conference schedule this year,” Smith said. “I feel like we have a lot of competitive teams on the schedule that will help us get ready for conference play. What we’ve tried to do the last few years is schedule opponents that have a different style of play than us. In the past, that’s really helped us getting ready for conference play, I think.”
UAB will hold two exhibition games before opening regular season play on Nov. 9. The Blazers face Brewton Parker on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m., before taking the court against UAH on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The Green and Gold will then tipoff the regular season on Nov. 9, hosting Austin Peay at Noon before hitting the road for the first time when it heads to Alabama A&M on Nov. 12. UAB will follow those two opening games with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to play SEC foe Vanderbilt on Nov. 15.
“We’ve scheduled a couple big matchups, including Vanderbilt, Chattanooga and UT Martin, in addition to some other teams on our schedule," Smith said. "We have an opportunity to go to George Mason and play in the Samford Thanksgiving Classic, which will have some good teams competing.”
Tipping off in the Blazers’ lone regular season tournament, the squad will face Tennessee State and Alabama State at the Samford Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24, respectively. Following the tournament action, UAB returns to the road with trips to High Point (Nov. 27) and George Mason (Dec. 2) before a four-game home stretch that includes Morehead State (Dec. 18), UT Martin (Dec. 22), UNC Greensboro (Dec. 30) and UT Chattanooga (Jan. 2).
UAB opens C-USA action on Jan. 10 when it takes on UCF on the road, while opening its conference home slate with a meeting against Houston (Jan. 13).
The Blazers’ other home conference games include Memphis (Jan. 24), Southern Miss (Jan. 31), East Carolina (Feb. 10), Marshall (Feb. 17), Tulane (Feb. 21), and Tulsa (March 3) before closing out the regular season at home against UCF (March 7).
