BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Forward Janae Smith will transfer to UAB from Illinois State to join the Blazers’ women’s basketball team, head coach Randy Norton announced Monday.
"We are very excited to have Janae join our basketball family,” said Norton. “She is a very versatile player that will be a powerful presence rebounding and scoring. She brings great experience at the collegiate level and will be a great asset to our team."
Smith, a 6-foot-2 forward, was the second-leading scorer for the Redbirds last season. She appeared in all 35 games, starting 34, and averaged 13.6 points per game. A dual-threat, Smith also led Illinois State in rebounds, totaling 281 for an average of 8.0 a game.
Prior to competing for the Redbirds, Smith played for the College of Charleston where she averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game. Her efforts earned her two Southern Conference Player of the Week honors and she was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team.
A native of Matteson, Ill., Smith attended Rich Central High School where she was an ESPN All-Area recipient and was named one of the top-50 players in the state. She helped lead her high school team to the regional championships as a senior and was named the team MVP as a senior and junior.
Smith earned All-Conference honors each of her four years, was named to the All-Area team three years and received All-State honors as a junior and senior. She tallied 18.1 points and nine rebounds per game during her high school career.
Smith joins Lauren McGraw as the second transfer signee for Norton this offseason. Both will be required to sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer regulations.
