UAB women's basketball team will host Florida International in the first round of the Women's NIT, Friday night at 7 p.m. (See Ticket Information at Bottom of Page)
The Lady Blazers finished the regular season with a record of 18-10. They were 10-6 in Conference USA and finished tied for second in the league's National Division and third overall.
Florida International, out of the Sun Belt Conference, is 20-9 overall. They Golden Panthers were 11-5 in conference play.
The winner of the UAB-Florida International game will play the winner Memphis at Alabama.
This will be the fourth time the two schools have met. The last time they played was in 1994 when UAB won 66-63. FIU won 95-74 in 1992. The first meeting was in 1981 when the Lady Blazers took a 110-38 decision.
This is the second straight year for post-season play for UAB. Last year the Lady Blazers competed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the tournament's "Sweet Sixteen." Mississippi State, who the Lady Blazers defeated to get into the final 16, is also in this year's WNIT.
It is the fifth time UAB has advanced to post-season play under head coach Jeannie Milling. The Lady Blazers participated in the NWIT in 1991 and '92 and the NCAA tournament in '94 and 2000.
UAB features All-American Deanna Jackson. She is second in the nation in scoring, averaging 25.1 points per game and sixth in rebounds, averaging 11.8 per contest. Mia Thrash is averaging 13.1 points per game and freshman Natasha Thomas is scoring 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Gergana Slavecha leads Florida International with 19 points per game. Cormisha Cotton is scoring 12 points per game and leads the team with eight rebounds a game.
