BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB women’s basketball junior forward Ashley Grimes has been named Conference USA’s Co-Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
The Selma, Ala., native joins SMU’s Keena Mays for the weekly award after the two combined for 59 points last Thursday in a thrilling three overtime loss at Moody Coliseum in Dallas.
Grimes, who scored a career-high 31 points in UAB’s 62-58 win against East Carolina on Sunday, became the first Blazer to post over 30 points in a single game since Jala Harris tallied 40 in a win at Marshall on Jan. 30, 2010.
Grimes is averaging 25 points per game over the last three contests and has scored in double figures in 13 of her 17 starts on the season.
This is the first Conference USA honor for the 5-foot-9 forward, who transferred to the Blazers from Wallace Community College.
UAB faces Memphis in a road contest on Thursday. Opening tip for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
