BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Senior UAB women's basketball player Amber Jones has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 Team as voted on by members of CoSIDA, the governing body of collegiate sports information directors.
Jones, who boasts a 3.67 cumulative GPA, will now be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team.
"Since I was a kid, my mentality has been to work as hard as you can at everything you do," Jones said. "I am honored to be given this award and look forward to helping my teammates finish out this season."
The Town Creek, Ala., native leads the team in scoring this year with a 13.9 points per game average. She is one of 25 Blazers to score 1, 000 points in her career with 1, 368 and was an All-Conference USA performer last season.
"Amber is an exceptional athlete," UAB head coach Audra Smith said. "A lot of people don't know this but she was actually offered an academic scholarship as well as an athletic scholarship to UAB. To be in her field of study, it takes a brilliant young lady to succeed like she has."
Off the court, Jones is involved in several organizations, including the Birmingham YMCA, Ronald McDonald House and Lakeshore Foundation. She has also been heavily active with the McWane Center Mini Camps for Children and the Miracle League of Gardendale, Ala.
"UAB and the game of basketball has given so much to me, so I feel like I should always give back," Jones said.
The exercise science major is one of five athletes named to the District 2 team and is set to graduate in May. She plans on attending physical therapy school at UAB.
