BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB women’s basketball team opened up the 2012-13 schedule by defeating Brewton-Parker College, 75-29, in an exhibition game inside Bartow Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazer defense continued where it left off from last season, forcing the Barons into 30 turnovers and holding the opposition to a 26.3 shooting percentage for the day.
UAB’s offense countered by shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, including a blistering 52.9 percent in the second half, making 18 of 34 shots after intermission.
“I’m really exceptionally proud of our effort,” UAB women’s basketball head coach Audra Smith said. “I felt we played hard on the defensive end and also on the offensive end. I was happy to have the opportunity to play everybody.”
A total of 12 UAB players stepped onto the court, including leading scorer Amber Jones, who finished with a game-high 17 points. The senior drained 6-of-10 shots and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the victory.
Two more Blazers reached double figures in scoring, including Ashley Grimes and Michaelea Kleist, who posted 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Khalilah Watson filled up the box score for the Blazers as well, scoring four points and adding five assists and five steals.
“There are errors that we have to work on, but everything we have to work on is definitely correctable,” Smith said. “I am really proud of the way the freshmen stepped out and didn’t show any nervousness and played hard. Our staple this year is going to be effort and energy – exceeding the opposition’s effort and energy and playing at a high level defensively and trying to get as many transition opportunities as possible and we were able to do that tonight."
The Blazers set the tempo of the game in the opening stanza, jumping out to a 16-0 lead with just over 14 minutes to play in the first half. During that stretch, Grimes drained a pair of 3-pointers. UAB would take a 36-13 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Kleist made 4-of-5 shots for eight points and Grimes added on nine points of her own to help the Blazers cruise to victory.
Next up for the Blazers is the second of two scheduled exhibition games. UAB will host UAH on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. CT.
