“That was a bad loss,” said head coach Randy Norton. “I felt like we had that game won. We were up by 10 with three minutes left in the game. We just didn’t play with much poise down the stretch and I feel like we just gave it away.”
UAB is now 15-11 on the season and 7-6 in Conference
Three players scored in double figures for the Blazers. Chapman and Grimes led the team with 19 points and sophomore Chelsee Black finished with 11 points. Chapman also had her 15th double-double, and fourth-straight, with 15 rebounds on the night.
The Blazers outrebounded the Golden Eagles, bringing down 44 boards to 28 for Southern Miss. Sophomore Brittany Winborne tallied 11 rebounds, Grimes finished with seven and sophomore Kayla Anderson added six.
Southern Miss jumped out quickly on the Blazers in the first half and would hold on to take a 37-30 lead into the break. Black scored all 11 of her points in the first half, including three 3-pointers for the Blazers.
UAB fought its way back into the game in the second half, led by Grimes who scored 15 of her 19 points after halftime. Junior Miranda Burroughs buried a three at the 16:00 mark that sparked a 13-2 run by the Blazers over three minutes. Burroughs hit all three of her 3-pointers in that span.
The Golden Eagles cut UAB’s lead to two, 53-51, at the 9:54 mark, but the Blazers countered with a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 63-53, with 6:49 remaining.
UAB was up by seven, 67-60, with 2:51 to go in the game but turned the ball over several times and Southern Miss capitalized on the opportunities to eventually retake the lead, 68-67 with 1:30 left on the clock.
Down by three, Chapman scored on a layup and was fouled. She made the free throw to tie the game at 70-70 with 27 seconds to go. With one more possession, Kierra Jordan made a layup to score the winning shot for Southern Miss. Jordan and Jamierra Faulkner led the Golden Eagles with 16 points apiece.
“I thought our second half was outstanding,” remarked Norton. “We had an outstanding second half until about two and a half minutes left. There is nothing we can do about it now, we just have to get ready for the next game.”
The Blazers will play their final road game of the regular season this Saturday, March 1 when the team takes on No. 23 Middle Tennessee. The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m. CT.
