BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Chattanooga outscored the UAB women's basketball team by 14 in the second half as the Blazers fell to UTC, 66-57, Wednesday at Bartow Arena.
UAB moves to 9-4 overall on the season before next week's Conference-USA opener against UCF on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. ET. UTC improves to 9-2 overall on the year with the win.
Junior forward Ashley Grimes and senior guard Amber Jones were the only two Blazers in double figures with Grimes' game high of 17 and 14 from Jones. Chattanooga had one player in double digits with Ashlen Dewart's 12 on the day.
UTC outrebounded the Blazers, 43-28, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass, which led to 20 second-chance points. The Lady Mocs also saw great production off the bench, outscoring the Blazers in that category, 19-8.
UAB dropped Wednesday's game despite holding a 28-23 halftime advantage. The Blazer defense forced 10 UTC miscues in the period and held the lead for the final 17 minutes after Grimes hit a layup at the 17:28 mark.
UAB's advantage quickly disappeared in the final 20 minutes of action as the Lady Mocs outscored the Blazers 13-8 to open the period. UTC's Taylor Hall knocked in a pair of free throws with 14:10 left to give her team a 36-35 lead - its first since the early portion of the opening half.
The game changed hands four times in the second frame with Chattanooga using a 52-percent shooting performance to grab its largest lead of nine (60-51) with 1:39 to go.
UAB's comeback effort in the final minute fell short, however, as the Lady Mocs hit 78-percent from the free-throw line (18-of-23) to seal the game, 66-57.
Wednesday's contest represented the Blazers' final non-conference matchup of the season. UAB enters C-USA action after being picked to finish third by league coaches.
