Men's Tennis At Crimson Tide Fall Championships

David Zimmerman fell his opening round singles match on Friday.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- Chris Helliar and Rafael Rondino won singles matches here Friday to highlight play for the UAB men's tennis team on the first day of the Crimson Tide Fall Championships.

Helliar advanced in his flight with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Tulane's Alex Van Cott while Rondino moved into Saturday's second round with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over South Alabama's Alex Bernard.

Blazer senior David Zimmerman fell in his opening day match, losing to the nation's No. 59-ranked player, Daniel Proskura of Alabama, 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, UAB's Korhan Ates was outlasted in his singles match by Auburn's Michael Wardell, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

In doubles play, the UAB duo of Ates and Rondino got past Furman's Jacob Behal and Richard Cassagrande, 8-4, before losing the Alabama team of Proskura and David Vieyra, 8-3.

The Blazers' tandem of Helliar and Zimmerman dropped an 8-1 decision to Auburn's Andreas Mies and Lukas Ollert but bounced back to claim an 8-4 win over the Furman team of Joel Cook and Tyler Droll.

Play continues Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
