AUBURN, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team got off to an excellent start Thursday on the opening day of play at the 2011 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
The Blazers had three players advance to the Round of 32 in singles and also had a doubles team win its first round match. A second Blazer doubles duo -- Danny Manlow and Chris Helliar -- is seeded in the 9-16 grouping and received a first round bye on Thursday.
Manlow, seeded 17-32 in singles, had a first round bye before downing LSU's Roger Anderson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. David Zimmerman, also seeded among the 17-32 group, cruised past Etham Frenkel of Tulane, 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile, sophomore Helliar won twice on Thursday to move into the Round of 32. He bested South Alabama's Alex Bernard, 6-4, 6-3, and then outlasted Matt Frost, a 17-32 seed from Southern Miss, 7-5, 7-5.
Daniel Moser fell in his opening round singles match, losing to Dimitry Kozionov of Nicholls, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Manlow and Helliar were 8-3 winners over Tulane's Coby Kramer-Golinkoff and Takuma Ohashi.
The Blazers will be back in action on Friday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on the Auburn University campus.
Manlow will be matched against Auburn's Alex Stamchev, seeded 5-8, while Zimmerman goes against No. 2 seed Louis Cant of Mississippi State. Helliar faces a Round of 32 matchup with Stuart Kenyon of Alabama.
In doubles, Manlow and Helliar will play Alabama's Jarryd Botha and Rens Van der Vis while Moser and Zimmerman are scheduled to play 5-8 seed Lucas Lopasso and Rafael Rondino of Auburn.
