BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Chris Helliar became the first UAB player in 14 years to earn first-team all-conference recognition on Thursday when the Blazer senior was named to the 2014 Conference USA Men's Tennis first unit for singles.

Helliar experienced an outstanding final season at UAB as he finished with a 30-9 singles record to become the first Blazer in 20 years to register 30 or more singles victories.

The Bournemouth, England native played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for UAB and tallied a 14-7 singles mark at the top spot in the singles lineup. Helliar has been ranked nationally in the ITA singles rankings since the first week of January. He is currently listed at No. 86 in ITA rankings.

Helliar partnered with Mitchell Martell at No. 1 doubles during the 2014 dual match season and the Blazer duo compiled a record of 15-6.

Helliar was named the C-USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on April 1.

He vaulted into the rankings after a memorable fall season when he went 16-2 in singles and reached the semifinal round of the UTSA/ITA Southern Regional Championships. Helliar, who defeated three ranked opponents in the fall, won a singles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Helliar is the first UAB player since the 2000 season to earn a spot on the all-conference first team. The Blazers' last first-team selection was Martin Woisetchlager.
