TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- UAB's David Zimmerman won twice in singles Saturday to move into the consolation final of the top division of the Crimson Tide Fall Championships.
Saturday was the second day of play at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Zimmerman, who lost his first match Friday, has come back to win matches over Ettore Zito of Middle Tennessee (6-2, 6-3) and Joe Young of Tulane (6-2, 6-3). The Blazer will meet Samford's Elliott Banwell in Sunday's title match.
UAB junior Chris Helliar lost his second round match Saturday to Alabama's Carlos Taborga, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Helliar will meet Luke Synn of Furman Sunday in consolation play in his bracket.
After winning an opening round match Friday, the Blazers' Rafael Rondino fell to Dominik Koepfer, 6-4, 6-4. Later in the day, Rondino had to retire in his match against Middle Tennessee's Christoph Lang, 6-2, 3-2, ret.
UAB newcomer Korhan Ates lost to Furman's Jakob Behal, 6-3, 6-4, before bouncing back later in the day to defeat Phillip Barnes of Jackson State, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, Helliar and Zimmerman dropped an 8-2 match to Samford's duo of Zac Dunkle and Alex Sajonz. The Blazers' team of Ates and Rondino lost to Alabama's Daniel Proskura and David Vieyra, 8-3
