Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play At Samford Fall Invite

Lucas Dirube finished 3-0 in singles during the weekend at the Samford Fall Invite.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB's men's tennis team wrapped up play Sunday in the Samford Fall Invite and a senior and a freshman highlighted the action for the Blazers.

Dirube, a Uruguay native in his fourth season for the Blazers, completed a perfect 3-0 singles performance with his Sunday and earned the Flight No. 2 title. Matthew Hill, a first-year student-athlete from Marietta, Ga., won again on the final day of play and earned the No. 4 Flight championship.

In addition, Dirube and teammate Luiz Felipe Pinto were tabbed the winners of Flight No. 2 doubles draw.

The Blazers won five of seven singles matches Sunday on the last day of the three-day event.

Dirube capped his 3-0 weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Samford's Trey Carter. Hill downed Jacksonville State's Samuel Kellett, 6-2, 6-2. Other singles winners for UAB Sunday included Pinto, Nick Iannuzzi and Charles McCombs.

UAB, host Samford and Jacksonville State participated in the tournament at the Samford Tennis Center.

The format in the event consisted of flighted round-robin singles and doubles brackets with the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in one draw, the No. 3 and 4 players in a second draw and the No. 5 and 6 players in a third draw. There were also be two doubles flights.
