BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB swept its three doubles matches and added a pair of singles wins to highlight play for the Blazer men's tennis team Saturday at the Samford Fall Invite.
UAB, host Samford and Jacksonville State are playing in the tournament at the Samford Tennis Center.
The format in the event consists of flighted round-robin singles and doubles brackets with the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in one draw, the No. 3 and 4 players in a second draw and the No. 5 and 6 players in a third draw. There will also be two doubles flights.
First-year Blazer Donovan McSeveney and Lucas Dirube were the singles winners for UAB Saturday. McSeveney defeated Samford's Elliot Barnwell, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, while Dirube was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Austin Akers of Samford.
In doubles, McSeveney and Mitchell Martell downed Pedro Wagner and Jaryd Reese of Jacksonville, State, 8-6. Dirube and Luiz Felipe Pinto beat Mathias Chaim and Dylan Gee of JSU, 8-3, while Matthew Hill and Charles McCombs defeated the Gamecocks' Felipe Diaz and Austin McCormick, 8-3.
The three-day event will wrap up Sunday.
