BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB men's tennis team won six matches on the first day of play Friday at the Samford Fall Invite.
The Blazers, who are playing the three-day event without their top two players Chris Helliar and Rafael Rondino, won five times in singles and a doubles match.
UAB, host Samford and Jacksonville State are playing in the tournament at the Samford Tennis Center.
The format in the event consists of flighted round-robin singles and doubles brackets with the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in one draw, the No. 3 and 4 players in a second draw and the No. 5 and 6 players in a third draw. There will also be two doubles flights.
Mitchell Martell, Lucas Dirube and Luiz Felipe Pinto were winners in Flights No. 1 and No. 2. Matthew Hill and Charles McCombs were Blazers to win in the No. 3 and No. 4 Flights.
Martell downed Jacksonville State's Dylan Gee, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, Dirube outlasted JSU's Mathias Chaim, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 while Pinto eased past the Gamecocks' Diaz, 6-1, 6-0. UAB's Donovan McSeveney lost a tight 7-5, 7-6 decision to Jacksonville State's Pedro Wagner.
Hill took care of JSU's Felipe Wenzel, 7-6, 6-2, and McCombs rallied to defeat the Gamecocks' Joshua Bourke, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 3 and No. 4 Flights.
In the No 1 doubles flight, McSeveney and Martell fell to Samford's Elliot Barnwell and Trey Carter, 8-4. In No. 2 doubles flight action, Dirube and Pinto defeated Austin Akers and Fares Kilani, 8-4.
