BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Junior Chris Helliar made his fall debut Friday by winning in both singles and doubles as the UAB men's tennis team played its first day at the Samford Fall Invitational.
Helliar, a Great Britain native who had missed the Blazers' first two tournaments of their fall schedule due to injury, defeated Troy's Andre Stabile, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in singles and also teamed with Lucas Dirube in doubles to down the Samford team of Zac Dunkle and Alex Salonz, 8-5.
UAB's Korhan Ates rallied in singles to beat Troy's Sami Ghorbel, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Dirube dropped his singles match against the Trojans' Anas Rouchdi, 6-4, 6-4, while Blazer freshman Luiz Felipe Pinto fell to Daniel Bustamante of Troy, 7-5, 6-1.
UAB's Nick Iannuzzi lost a tight three-setter to the Trojans' Mansingh Athare, dropping the third-set tie-breaker, 9-7. David Cooper dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Troy's Patrick Eichler.
UAB, playing without three of its top players (David Zimmerman, Rafael Rondino and Tom Puetz) this weekend, lost a pair of doubles matches to Samford. The Blazer duo of Ates and Pinto fell to the Bulldogs' Elliot Barnwell and Garrison Laduca, 8-5.
Meanwhile, Cooper and Iannuzzi lost by an 8-2 score to Austin Akers and Fares Kilani.
Play will continue Saturday morning at the Samford Tennis Center and run through Sunday.
