TULSA, Okla. ---- UAB tennis' Chris Helliar saw his win streak finally come to an end here Wednesday as the Blazer senior lost his final qualifying round match at the ITA All-American Championships.
For four straight days, Helliar's singles play was nearly flawless as he steamrolled his way through four pre-qualifying matches and a pair in the qualifying draw.
But on Wednesday, the win streak that reached six the past several days in Tulsa and 12-0 overall this fall was halted, just one victory short of a berth in the main draw of collegiate tennis' premiere fall event.
Helliar fell in his match Wednesday, losing 7-6 (4), 6-2 to NC State's Austin Powell. Helliar was the only player who advanced from the pre-qualifying draw who was still playing on Wednesday.
Helliar, from Bournemouth, England, on Wednesday was named the Conference USA Tennis Athlete of the Month for his performance in Tulsa, as well as his showing in Athens, Ga. in mid-September when he captured the Southern Intercollegiate Championships "B" Division singles title.
