MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won all six of its singles matches Saturday as the Blazers enjoyed a productive second day here at the Dale Short Shootout.
The Blazers, competing at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in the three-day event hosted by Middle Tennessee, was perfect in six singles matchups with Lipscomb. The Bison won two of three doubles matches against UAB.
UAB senior David Zimmerman was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Lipscomb's Oliver Strecker with Blazer newcomer Rafael Rondino, a transfer from Auburn, claiming a victory over David Salazar by the same score.
Tom Puetz cruised to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lipscomb's Colby Shaw with Lucas Dirube edging past Stuart Tierney, 7-6, (7-5), 6-4.
Head coach Derek Tarr's team claimed its other two singles wins came from Luiz Felipe Pinto and Korhan Ates, both competing in their first tournament for the Blazers. Pinto downed Lipscomb's Tanner Brown, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) while Ates was a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) winner over John Tougher.
In doubles action, Puetz and Zimmerman beat the Bison's Strecker and Cortez, 8-4. UAB's Dirube and Rondino lost a tight 9-8 (7-4) decision to Salazar and Shaw. Ates and Pinto fell 8-5 to Lipcomb's duo of Brown and Tierney, 8-5.
The Blazers, who played against Southern Illinois on Friday, will complete action at the Dale Short Shootout on Sunday when they take on host Middle Tennessee.
