ATHENS, Ga. ---- UAB senior Chris Helliar won twice Saturday to advance to singles quarterfinal round play to highlight the Blazers' action at the 46th Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
Helliar downed Virginia Tech's Florian Nicoud, 6-4, 6-1, in Saturday's Division II Round of 16 before advancing with a walk/over against Portland's Alex Ferrero. Helliar will now take on East Tennessee State's Diego Nunez at 11 a.m. in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Rafael Rondino fell in his Round of 16 singles match in Division I singles to No. 5 seed Hunter Harrington of Clemson, 6-2, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Rondino had defeated Vanderbilt's Ryan Smith, 7-6 (4), 6-2, in second round action.
In doubles play, UAB's tandem of Helliar and Rondino advanced to quarterfinal round play in Division I doubles with an 8-5 win over UCF's Riaan Du Toit and Matthew Gladstone before falling to the Vanderbilt team of Gonzalez Austin and Ryan Lipman, 8-6.
In Division II doubles, UAB's team of Mitchell Martell and Donovan McSeveny will play in Sunday's quarterfinals after an 8-3 win over Armstrong's Pablo Gor and Ignacio Hernandez. They will take on the Winthrop duo of Juan Pablo Boada and Yuta Horokawa Sunday in the quarters.
In consolation play of Division III, Martell downed Christian Kerrigan of Georgia Southern, 6-0, 7-6 (4) while McSeveny defeated Mercer's Austin Emmet, 6-0, 6-1.
