BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- After dropping the doubles point for only the fifth time this season, the UAB men's tennis team rallied by winning five of six singles matches to defeat visiting Troy, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.

The Blazers (12-7), who for the sixth time in the past seven matches, trailed coming out of doubles, something they haven't experienced often this season.

But UAB stormed back, aided by three singles wins that were extended to third sets, to down the Trojans (7-16) for the second time in two weeks. The Blazers beat Troy (4-1) on March 28 at the Middle Tennessee Shootout.

Donovan McSeveney provided the clinching fourth point with his win at No. 4 singles over Troy's Daniel Bustamante, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3.

The Trojans' 1-0 lead after doubles came on the strength of wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Sami Ghorbel and Pablo Moreno edged past the UAB duo of Chris Helliar and Mitchell Martell at No. 1, 8-6, with Bustamante and Gabriel Dias defeating the Blazers' Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rafael Rondino at No. 3, 8-4.

UAB took the No. 2 doubles match as Lucas Dirube and McSeveney won 8-7 (5) over the Trojans' Mansingh Athare and Tommy Cundy.

Martell, Stepan Vancurik and Pinto changed the momentum with singles wins to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead. Martell and Vancurik won straight-set matches.

Martell was the first Blazers to win in singles as he beat Troy's Cundy, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot. Vancurik made it 2-1 as he took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pablo Moreno at No. 3. Pinto outlasted Athare at the No. 6 position by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

In a battle of two outstanding No. 1 players, Troy's Dias, a transfer from Texas Tech, defeated UAB's Helliar, ranked No. 80 nationally, 6-3, 7-5.

After the McSeveney win clinched the match for the Blazers, UAB senior Rafael Rondino won a three-setter over Troy's Ghorbel, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-2, default, at No. 2 singles.

UAB will be back in action Sunday as the Blazers travel to South Alabama to take on the No. 75-ranked Jaguars in a 1 p.m. CT match.
