Mitchell Martell won at No. 5 singles for UAB Sunday.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.. ---- The UAB men's tennis team grabbed the early lead by claiming the doubles point and then went on to a 4-1 victory Sunday over DePaul at the Middle Tennessee Shootout.
The Blazers (11-7) finished third in the eight-team event with the win over the Blue Demons.
UAB took a 1-0 lead by winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Chris Helliar and Mitchell Martell won at No. 1 with an 8-5 win over Filip Dzanko and David Vieyra. Lucas Dirube and Donovan McSeveney teamed for an 8-0 win at No. 2 over Jan-Willem Feilzer and Paul John.
Helliar, No. 80 in the ITA singles rankings, along with McSeveney and Martell, were the singles winners for the Blazers.
Helliar defeated the Blue Demons' Filip Dzanko, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 1. Meanwhile McSeveney was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Joshua Schramm at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2, while Martell defeated Tim Corwin at the No. 5 position, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
David Vieyra provided the win for DePaul (7-11) as he defeated Stepan Vancurik, 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
UAB will be in action again on Sunday, April 6, as the Blazers play host to Old Dominion in a Conference USA match at 10 a.m. at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
