NASHVILLE, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team fell in its semifinal match Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Shootout, seeing its four-match win streak come to an end in a 4-1 loss to host Middle Tennessee at the Nashboro Village.
The Blazers (10-7) managed just one win in the match as senior Chris Helliar, ranked No. 80 in singles nationally, took a 6-4, 6-3 straight set victory over the Blue Raiders' Ettore Zito at the No. 1 position.
Middle Tennessee (7-11) captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and then took wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles spots. Victor Cornea downed the Blazers' Rafael Rondino at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1. David Fox was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles over UAB's Stepan Vancurik while Victor Hoang outlasted the Blazers' Donovan McSeveney at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were halted once Middle Tennessee clinched the match.
UAB will play its final match of the tournament Sunday in a consolation contest for third place against the loser of Saturday's South Alabama/DePaul matchup.
