SAN DIEGO ----- The No. 73-ranked UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and then claimed three singles victories Saturday en route to a 4-1 win over Denver on the final day of play at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic.
The Blazers (13-9) captured the win over the Pioneers after losses to No. 23 Harvard and No. 72 Oklahoma State Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Junior Rafael Rondino provided the clinching fourth point against Denver with his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Henry Craig.
UAB grabbed a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar were 8-4 winners over Denver's Max Krammer and Favbio Biasion at No. 2 while Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rondino downed the tandem of Craig and Luke Manley at No. 3, 8-3.
The Blazers also got wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Helliar defeated Krammer, 7-6 (4), 6-1 at the No. 4 spot while Dirube won in straight sets over Alex Clinkenbeard at No. 6, 6-4, 6-0. Denver (3-11) notched its only win in the match at No. 2 as Jens Vorkefeld defeated UAB's Puetz, 6-2, 6-0.
UAB will return to action Wednesday, March 27 when the Blazers travel to play in-state foe Troy.
