SAN DIEGO ----- David Zimmerman won his 12th consecutive singles match as the senior accounted for UAB's only point of the day Thursday as No. 23 Harvard defeated the 73rd-ranked Blazers, 4-1, in the opening round of the Hilton San Diego Spring Valley Spring Classic.
UAB (12-8) dropped the doubles point as the Crimson won matches at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Andy Nguyen and Nicky Hu were 8-1 winners at No. 2 over the Blazers' Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar while Kelvin Lam and Alex Steinroeder downed Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rafael Rondino, 8-0, at the No. 3 spot.
UAB's No. 1 duo of Zimmerman and Tom Puetz were leading Harvard's No. 67-ranked team of Casey McMaster and Denis Nguyen, 4-2, when doubles play was halted.
Down 1-0, Zimmerman continued his recent torrid play with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Denis Nguyen. But Zimmerman's win, improving his record to 14-5 in duals this season, would be the Blazers' only victory in the match.
Shaun Chaudhuri claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Puetz and With Andy Nguyen taking a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 ovr the Blazers' Helliar. Lam accounted for the Crimson's other win in the match as he defeated Pinto, 6-0, 7-5.
Rondino was leading Steinroeder, 2-6, 6-6 (3-5) at No. 3 singles when the match was cliniched. MacMaster and Dirube were in a tight match at No. 6 when play stopped with Dirube trailing 4-6, 6-6 (5-6).
The three-day event continues Friday as UAB will be matched against No. 72 Oklahoma State, a 4-1 first round loser to No. 37 and host San Diego State.
