BOISE, Idaho -- The UAB men's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over Nevada on Tuesday at Boise State's Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blazers (10-3), rated No. 73 in the latest ITA rankings, won all three doubles matches over Nevada (5-8) to claim the opening point and then cleaned up in the bottom two-thirds of the singles lineup.
UAB's Chris Helliar, Lucas Dirube and Tom Puetz each posted singles wins in straight sets. Helliar was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Nevada's Moez Echarqui at No. 3 singles, while Dirube claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jordan Rozenfeld at the No. 5 position. Puetz defeated Quentin Mege, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Blazers' fourth singles win came at the No. 4 position, where Daniel Moser was a three-set winner over Fernando Sunago, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
The only losses on the day for UAB came at the top two singles positions. Danny Manlow dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Wes Derbel at No. 1 singles, while David Zimmerman suffered a 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Victor Ouvrard at No. 2.
The Blazers actually needed just three singles wins thanks to their play on the doubles courts. UAB's tandems of Zimmerman/Puetz, Manlow/Moser and Helliar/Dirube each won close contests as the Blazers picked up the match's opening point.
UAB will remain in Boise for the rest of the week on its Spring Break trip. The Blazers play Utah State on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. MT and then take part in the Boise Spring Classic on Friday and Saturday.
