BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team swept through doubles and won five singles matches in impressive fashion Sunday en route to a 6-1 victory over visiting Mercer at the George Ward Tennis Center.
The win was the third in a row for the Blazers (5-6) while the Bears dropped to 1-8.
Rafael Rondino, a transfer from Auburn, provided the clinching fourth point for UAB as he downed Mercer's Anderson Scarpa at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
The Blazers jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping doubles. Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar were the first Blazers to post a win as they defeated Austin Emmet and Anderson Scarpa, 8-3, at the No. 2 position. Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman sealed the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 1 over Joao Pagan and Peter Tauchner with UAB's Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rondino teaming to beat Vincent Delise and Arsay Mohanty at No. 3, 8-5.
The Blazers continued their momentum in singles. Freshman Pinto won 4-1, retired at No. 6 singles over Emmet with Zimmerman easing past Mohanty at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0.
After Rondino clinched for UAB with his win at No. 3, Puetz made it 5-0 Blazers with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Tauchner. Helliar gave UAB its sixth win on the day with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 over Pagan.
Mercer notched its lone point with a three-set decision at No. 5 singles as Delise edged past Dirube, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.
UAB will be back in action next Friday when it plays host to Nicholls State in a 10 a.m. CT dual match at George Ward.
