ATLANTA ---- For the second straight day, UAB's men's tennis team captured the doubles point but fell short in singles play. On Saturday, it was No. 59 Nebraska that rallied in singles action, winning five of six singles matches to defeat the Blazers, 5-2.
The Blazers (4-5) claimed wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions as Chris Helliar and Mitchell Martell were 8-6 winners over the Cornhuskers' Marc Herrmann and Beauregard Treyz at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, UAB's Luiz Felipe Pinto and Rafael Rondino took an 8-3 win over Dusty Boyer and Andrew Dzulynsky, 8-3.
UAB grabbed its other point with a win at No. 5 singles as McSeveney beat Beauregard Treyz, 6-2, 6-3.
Nebraska (5-3) took a pair of three-setters in singles that proved to be pivotal. Herrmann got past Rondino at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Dzulynsky defeated UAB's Stepan Vancurik, 6-3, 3-6, 10-2.
In a matchup of the teams' top players, Nebraska's Boyer was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 1 over Helliar. The Cornhuskers also claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Tom Blackwell was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over UAB's Dirube at No. 3 while Vasileios Stavropouos beat Pinto at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-3.
UAB will next be in action on March 4 when the Blazers play host to Conference USA foe Southern Miss in a 1 p.m. CT match at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
