NASHVILLE, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team fell to No. 43 Vanderbilt, 4-3, here Sunday, as the Commodores fought off a match point at No. 2 singles to win the deciding match.

Gonzales Austin dropped the first set to the Blazers' Danny Manlow, 6-4, but battled back to force a tie-breaker in the second set.

After Manlow went up 5-3 in the breaker, Austin rallied to take the set, 7-6 (9-7), and then closed out the match with a 6-2 victory in the third and decisive set. The win provided the difference for Vandy in the hard-fought match.

UAB fell to 5-2 on the season as the Blazers saw their four-match win streak come to an end. The Commodores improved to 4-3.

UAB had come back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the match at 3-3 as Chris Helliar and Tom Puetz posted straight-set wins at No. 3 and 6 singles, respectively.

The Blazers won the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Manlow and Daniel Moser teamed at No. 2 doubles to defeat the VU duo of Suresh Edwaran and Charlie Jones, 8-5. Helliar and Lucas Dirube were 8-3 winners at the No. 3 spot over Joe Dorn and Jeff Offerdahl.

The Commodores' win in doubles came at No. 1 as Austin and Anton Kovrigin downed UAB's tandem of Puetz and David Zimmerman, 8-6.

Vanderbilt's Jones, ranked No. 66 in the country in singles, evened the score at 1-1 with his 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Zimmerman. Offerdahl gave the `Dores their first lead of the day with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over UAB's Moser at No. 4.

Dorn won a tight 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 5 over Blazer sophomore Dirube to give Vanderbilt a 3-1 advantage.

 

 

Helliar trimmed the margin to 3-2 with his 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles over Kovrigin. Puetz won by a 6-2, 6-2 score over Vandy's Eswaran at No. 6 to set up the deciding match between Austin and Manlow.

UAB will have a quick turnaround for its next match. The Blazers will play host to in-state foe Troy on Tuesday at George Ward Park. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CT start.
