BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team swept through doubles and then won five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory Sunday over visiting Kennesaw State.
The Blazers (4-6) have now won two matches in a row after winning for the second time in three days at the George Ward Tennis Center. UAB defeated Samford Friday, 4-3.
The path to Sunday's win started with a sweep of all three doubles positions for the Blazers.
Nick Iannuzzi and Luis Felipe Pinto teamed to beat the Owls' No. 3 tandem of Matthew Johnson and Nathan She, 8-4.
Seniors David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz ousted the Kennesaw team of Tobi Menhofer and Louis Theodor, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles while Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar were 8-6 winners at No. 2 over Goklalp Ozdemir and Alexander Pena.
In singles, Iannuzzi was the first off the court for the Blazers as he downed KSU's Johnson, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6. Puetz then bested Maksim Yorsh at the No. 2 position by a 6-2, 6-4 score. Chris Helliar gave UAB its clinching fourth point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
Zimmerman defeated Menhofer at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, before the Owls (2-3) notched their only win of the day, a 6-1, 6-4 decision by Ozdemir at No. 4 over Dirube.
Pinto gave the Blazers their sixth point in the match as he won a three-setter over Pena, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.
UAB will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 24 when the Blazers play host to Mercer at 2:00 p.m. CT.
