NASHVILLE, Tenn. ----- Senior David Zimmerman won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, but that was the only point the UAB men's tennis team captured Friday as No. 43 Middle Tennessee defeated the Blazers, 6-1, at the Nashboro Village indoor facility.
Zimmerman disposed of the Blue Raiders' Ben Davis by a 6-2, 6-2 score to account for the lone singles victory for UAB which dropped to 2-5 with the loss. All five of the Blazers' defeats have come at the hands of ranked teams.
UAB takes on Yale Saturday in its second match of the weekend starting at 1 p.m.
MTSU grabbed a 1-0 lead by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Zimmerman teamed with Tom Puetz at No. 1 to beat the Blue Raider duo of Marlon Brand and Yannick Born, 8-6.
Middle Tennessee's No. 2 team of Davis and Victor Cornea were 8-3 winners over UAB's Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar while the No. 3 tandem of David Fox and Christoph Lang downed the Blazers' Rafael Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto, 8-4.
In singles play, Born got past Helliar, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 to give MTSU in its second point of the match. Cornea quickly made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 over the Blazers' Rondino.
After Zimmerman made it a 3-1 margin with his triumph at No. 1 singles, Lang finished off a three-setter over Puetz at the No. 2 position, clinching the match for Middle Tennessee (5-2) with his 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win.
Fox defeated Pinto at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4, before Ettore Zito gave the Blue Raiders their final point of the day with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 win at No. 5 over Dirube.
