ROCK HILL, S.C. ----- UAB's men's tennis team won the key doubles point and captured victories at all three positions at the top of its singles lineup en route to a 4-3 victory Saturday over Winthrop.
With the win, the Blazers evened their record on the season at 2-2. They will be in action again Sunday as they take on Conference USA foe Charlotte at 10 a.m. CT.
Against Winthrop Saturday, the strength for UAB was its trio of seniors. Chris Helliar, Rafael Rondino and Lucas Dirube all won singles matches at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Helliar and Rondino were also part of the two winning Blazer doubles teams.
UAB won the doubles point as Helliar and Mitchell Martell teamed at No. 2 to defeat Winthrop's Yuta Hirokawa and Tremayne Mitchell, 6-2. At No. 3, Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto took a 6-5 win over the Eagles' duo of Steven Patrick and Juan Pablo Boada.
Winthrop salvaged a win in doubles at the No. 1 spot as Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak downed the Blazers Dirube and Donovan McSeveney, 6-0.
In singles, Helliar, the nation's No. 88-ranked singles player, defeated Hirokawa, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1. Rondino was a 6-5, 6-2 winner over Winthrop's Patrick at the No. 2 position and Dirube outlasted Comerford at No. 3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-5.
The Eagles gained their three points with wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.
Boada won a tight match over McSeveney, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 while Mitchell took a 6-1, 6-5 win at No. 5 singles over Martell. Michael Chen won a three-set decision over UAB's Pinto at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
