FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped a tight 4-3 decision to No. 55 Arkansas here Wednesday afternoon as the Razorbacks rallied to win four of six singles matches after losing the doubles point to the Blazers.
UAB (2-2), listed at No. 75 in the ITA rankings, took a 1-0 lead on the strength of doubles wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Rafael Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto downed the Arkansas duo of Christian Lee and Jovan Parlic at No. 3, 8-3, before Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar secured the doubles point with an 8-7 win at No. 2 over Gregoire Lehmann and Mike Ward.
Arkansas' Mike Nott quickly tied the score at 1-1 with his 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Dirube. In a matchup of the team's top players at No. 1, UAB's Zimmerman claimed a straight set victory over Lehmann, 6-3, 6-3.
But the Razorbacks then rallied with three straight tightly-contested victories to clinch the match. Parlic was a 6-4, 7-6 winner at No. 4 singles over UAB's Puetz while Hoang outlasted Pinto at the No. 6 spot, 7-6, 6-4.
The clincher for Arkansas came at No. 2 singles as Santiago Munoz rallied after losing the first set, 6-0, to the Blazers' Rondino to capture the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
UAB junior Chris Helliar gave the Blazers their third team point with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Ward.
