TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ----- The UAB men's tennis team captured the doubles point and went on to claim four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast here Sunday.
The No. 73-ranked Blazers (2-1) won two of three matches during the weekend, defeating the Eagles after splitting matches Saturday vs. Florida A&M (4-2 win) and 32nd-ranked Florida State (7-0 loss).
UAB took a 1-0 lead after winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar defeated the FGCU team of Lance Lvovsky and Dean Tsamas, 8-4, at No. 2 with Luiz Pinto and Rafael Rondino edging Michael Beiler and Gabriel Echeverry at No. 3 doubles, 8-7 (5).
UAB put the match away with wins at four singles positions. Zimmerman, Rondino, Puetz and Pinto were the singles winners for the Blazers.
Zimmerman downed Vives at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (8), ret. while Rondino outlasted Bao at the No. 2 spot, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3. Puetz claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lvovsky at No. 4 and Pinto rallied at No. 6 singles over Echeverry, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
UAB's Chris Helliar dropped a three-set decision at No. 3 singles to FGCU's Tsamas, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, with Beiler taking a 6-4, 7-5 win over Dirube at No. 5.
UAB will be back in action on Jan. 30 when the Blazers travel to play at No. 56-ranked Arkansas.
