Three Men's Soccer Players Tabbed All-Region

Senior defender Reed Matte earned NSCAA All-Midwest Third-Team recognition.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Three UAB men's soccer players were named to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Midwest Region team, the organization announced.

Senior defender Mladen Lemez earned first-team honors, while fellow defender Reed Matte and forward Kofi Gyawu earned third-team recognition.

Lemez, who earned second-team accolades in 2011, led the Blazers in his senior season with seven goals, and went 4-4 in penalty kicks. The Belgrade, Serbia native was also named to the Conference USA First Team for his performance in 2012.

A defensive mainstay, Matte scored a pair of goals in 2012, and earned three assists in his senior season. The Birmingham, Ala., native was also named to the C-USA Second Team, and the C-USA All Academic Team.

Gyawu led the 2012 squad with 17 total points (6g/5a) and 54 shot attempts. The Lilburn, Ga., native was previously named to the all-conference third team for the third time in his career.

UAB earned an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament and finished the season with a 10-8-2 record, and a 4-4 mark in conference action. The Blazers have recorded six tournament appearances in the last 14 years.
