BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior defender Ian Michalak of the UAB men’s soccer team was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, CoSIDA announced on Tuesday. Michalak became the second UAB men's soccer player all-time to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, joining Lukasz Kwapisz (2005-06).

After playing in just 10 games his first two years on campus, Michalak played in 13 matches for the Blazers in 2013. The junior defender tallied his first goal of his collegiate career against Mercer on Sunday, Sept. 21. In addition, Michalak was part of a UAB defense that had five clean sheets, which ranked sixth in Conference USA.

In the classroom, the neuroscience major owns a 3.94 cumulative GPA. Earlier this year, Michalak was recognized on the Conference USA All-Academic Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team for efforts off the pitch. He has earned Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Conference USA Academic Medal accolades every year he has been in Birmingham, as well.

Michalak and the UAB men's soccer team concluded the 2013 season with a 12-5-1 overall record. The Blazers were ranked as high No. 8 nationally this year following their victory against 2012 national champion Indiana.
