BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior defender Ian Michalak of the UAB men's soccer was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, as announced on Wednesday by the conference office. The Conference USA All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel on their field of play and in the classroom.
After playing in just 10 games his first two years on campus, Michalak has played in 13 matches for the Blazers this season. The junior defender tallied his first goal of his collegiate career against Mercer on Sunday, Sept. 21. In addition, Michalak has been part of a UAB defense that has five clean sheets in 2013, which ranks fifth in Conference USA.
In the classroom, the neuroscience major owns a 3.94 overall GPA. Earlier this season, Michalak was recognized on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team for efforts off the pitch. He has earned Conference USA Academic Medal and Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades every year he has been in Birmingham, as well.
Michalak and the UAB men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Charlotte in the 2013 Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded Blazers and sixth-seeded 49ers are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT in Charlotte, N.C.
