BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 15 UAB men's soccer team will begin its quest for its second Conference USA Tournament title in program history on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when it takes on Charlotte in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded Blazers will meet the sixth-seeded 49ers, the tournament host, at 7 p.m. CT at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C.
Six Blazers Earn All-Conference USA Honors
Six members of the UAB men's soccer team were named to the 2013 All-Conference USA teams, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Four of the six Blazers recognized made their first appearance on the All-Conference USA squads.
Sophomore forward Freddy Ruiz was the team's lone first-team selection. Redshirt junior midfielder Alex Clay and junior forward Diego Navarrete were second-team honorees, while senior goalkeeper Raphael Ville and junior defender Darion Copeland were selected to the third team. Freshman forward Rami Dajani was named to the conference all-freshmen squad.
Charlotte enters Wednesday night's quarterfinal matchup with a 9-5-3 overall record. The 49ers finished the regular season in sixth place in Conference USA with a 4-3-2 mark in conference play.
In its latest match, Charlotte scored a 3-0 victory against Conference USA foe FIU on Friday, Nov. 8. Sophomore forward Kyle Parker netted two goals against the Panthers, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Klay Davis notched his seventh clean sheet of the year. In addition, it marked the squad's fifth straight victory.
Parker leads the 49ers in scoring this season. The sophomore forward recorded 11 goals and three assists for 25 points during the regular season. He shared the Conference USA Golden Boot Award with UAB redshirt junior midfielder Alex Clay. Davis has started every match in net for Charlotte, holding a 0.80 goals against average.
Charlotte owns a 15-9-4 advantage in the all-time series against UAB. Earlier this season, the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic. In addition, the two have met in the postseason in each of the past three seasons.
