BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -
The 13th-ranked UAB men's soccer team, unbeaten in its last 10 matches, begins its defense of the Conference USA Tournament Championship Friday at 5 p.m. in Saint Louis.
The Championship is being held at SLU's Robert Hermann Stadium. The tournament champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Blazers, 13-3-2 overall, finished second in regular season play with a 5-1-2 league record. Saint Louis, ranked number 14, won the right to host by winning the regular season championship by a half-game over the Blazers. The difference was the Billikens' 1-0 win over UAB, in Saint Louis.
UAB earned a bye into the semi-finals in the six-team tournament with its second-place finish. The Blazers play the winner of Thursday's Louisville (6th seed, 11-8-1, 3-4-1) and Charlotte (3rd seed, 8-7-2, 5-2-1) match at 5 p.m. Cincinnati (5th seed, 6-8-3, 3-2-3) and Memphis (4th seed, 13-5-0, 5-3) face off in the second match, with that winner facing Saint Louis.
Against the potential semi-final opponents, UAB defeated Louisville 3-2 in overtime this past Sunday. Charlotte and UAB battled to a 1-1 tie in UAB's first conference match of the season, back on Sept. 17.
The Blazers have not lost since the match at Saint Louis. UAB is 9-0-1 since that game. This steak is similar to last season when the Blazers won the last nine matches of the regular season, won two straight in the conference tournament and then won its first two matches in the NCAA Tournament to advance to the "Elite Eight." The 13-game win streak ended with a 3-2 overtime loss to Santa Clara.
UAB defeated second ranked North Carolina and number 23 Furman earlier this year.
