BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior defender Ian Michalak of the men’s soccer team has been named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Wednesday. The Student-Athlete of the Week honor recognizes UAB student-athletes that shine on and off their respective fields of competition.
After playing in 10 matches his first two seasons at UAB, Michalak has been a regular contributor for the Blazers’ men’s soccer team in 2013. The junior defender has played in all but two matches this season. He has been a part of a UAB backline that has registered five clean sheets this year. In addition, Michalak scored his first goal of his collegiate career earlier in the season against Mercer on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Off the field, Michalak is a standout in the classroom. The neuroscience major owns a 3.94 overall GPA. He has earned Conference USA Academic Medal and Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades every year at UAB, as well.
Michalak and the UAB men’s soccer team are back in action on Wednesday when it takes on New Mexico on the road. The Blazers will then return to campus for Senior Day on Sunday, Nov. 3 against South Carolina.
