BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB men's soccer team will play in its final match of the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Memphis Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Last week, UAB (9-5-2, 4-3-0 C-USA) defeated UCF in a high-scoring showdown in Orlando, Fla. In the 4-3 victory, freshman Karl Chesterscored a pair of goals late in the game to ensure a spot for the squad in the Blazer-hosted 2012 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., Nov. 7-11.
Men's Soccer Tops Memphis, 1-0, On Late Penalty Kick
UAB senior forward Babayele Sodade scored on a penalty kick at the 89:32 mark to lead UAB to a dramatic 1-0 victory Memphis in Conference USA action Wednesday night. The contest was played at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., which marked the first-ever soccer match played at the venue.
Last Saturday, the Tigers and Florida International battled to a 1-1 tie to go into overtime, and scored a goal with seconds to go to win 2-1. Sophomore Benjamin Closanski scored both Memphis goals.
Junior Mark Sherrod leads Memphis with nine goals and four assists for 22 points on the season, while junior Liam Collins holds a team-high seven assists.
In 2011, UAB defeated Memphis 1-0, courtesy of a penalty kick in the 90th minute of the match.
