BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- For a third time this season, UAB men's soccer player Carl Woszczynski (Columbus, Ind.) has been tabbed the Conference USA men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. With his three awards this season, Woszczynski has been honored by the league more times in one season than any previous UAB player in school history.
"Carl is very deserving of this award and I am glad he was recognized by the league office," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "For him to have earned the conference weekly award three times in one season speaks volumes. He has played a big role in our success and I am happy to see his hard work paying off."
This past week, Woszczynski helped lead the No. 20 UAB men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over UCF on Saturday night. Woszczynski recorded his league-leading sixth shutout of the season, making two saves in the process including a diving stop on a UCF shot from six-yards out to preserve the shutout.
With six shutouts on the year, Woszczynski moves into a tie for third place in the school's single-season shutout list. On the season, he ranks second in the league in GAA (0.86), save percentage (.810) and total saves (51).
Woszczynski will lead the Blazers this Sunday when they take on South Carolina on UAB's senior night. The contest is slated to kick off at 7 p.m. CT with pregame senior recognition beginning approximately 15 minutes before kickoff. The contest is free to all students with a valid student ID.
