Oct. 23, 2000

The UAB men's soccer team jumped up to 10th in the latest national poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Blazers are 9-3-2 overall and have not lost in the last six matches. They defeated Memphis 2-1 and tied Cincinnati 0-0. UAB is ranked second in the South Region behind fourth ranked North Carolina, 14-2, a team UAB defeated 2-1 earlier this season.

The Blazers tied Cincinnati despite playing without leading scorer Martin Rey, who was out with an injury. Another starting forward Nelson Mata, saw limited playing time due to injury.

Goalkeeper David Clemente is one of the main reasons for the Blazers ranking. He has three solo shutouts this season, and one assisted shutout. Clemente has an impressive 0.94 goals against average for the season. Clemente has allowed more than one goal only once in the last ten matches and only three times this season. He has recorded 55 saves and allowed just 14 goals.

UAB travels to face Marquette in a Conference USA showdown, Friday night. The Blazers finish out their home season, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 against Georgia State.
