UAB Set To Host Annual Home Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team will host its annual home tournament, the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic from Friday, Sept. 13 - Sunday, Sept. 15. Charlotte, East Tennessee State, and Memphis will join the Blazers as the tournament's four participants.

Memphis and East Tennessee will kick off the tournament on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The Green and Gold will host No. 21 Charlotte in the nightcap. On Sunday, Memphis will face Charlotte at 12 p.m., then UAB and East Tennessee will play each other in the final match of the tournament at 2:30 p.m.

The 2013 season marks the 16th year of the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic. UAB captured the tournament title in 2012, marking the ninth time the Blazers have won the event. The Blazers have now won Classic titles in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Men's Soccer Leads Nation In Scoring
In the most recent NCAA statistical rankings, UAB has the highest scoring offense in the country. The Blazers are scoring at a clip of 3.67 goals per game, which is tied with Dayton for the top-spot in Division I men's soccer.

In addition, the squad ranks third in the nation in total goals (11) and sixth in total assists (10) and total points (32).

Individually, junior forward Diego Navarrete is one of the top scorers in the country. Navarrete is ranked second in points per game (3.00) and third in goals per game (1.33). He also ranks third in total goals (4) and fourth in total points (9).

Redshirt junior midfielder Alex Clay ranks second in the country in assists per game (1.00) after registering one helper in each of the Green and Gold's first three matches. Clay is tied for third in the nation with three total assists on the year.

Blazers Crack Top 10 In National Polls
The UAB men's soccer team has been recognized as one of the top-10 teams in the country in the most recent national polls, as announced Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The Blazers were ranked No. 8 in both major national polls, the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll and Soccer America Rankings. Last week, the squad was ranked No. 18 in the coaches' poll and No. 23 in the media rankings.

This marks the highest UAB has been ranked nationally since 2003. The Blazers were ranked No. 3 after a 6-0-2 start to the 2003 season.
