BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB junior forward Diego Navarrete was recognized as the Conference USA Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. It marked Navarrete’s second Offensive Player of the Week honor of his collegiate career.
Navarrete tallied seven points (3g, 1a) this past weekend at the VCU Nike Classic. His seven points and three goals both rank first among Conference USA members. Teammate Freddy Ruiz shares the top spot in goals, as well.
On Friday, Aug. 30, Navarrete led the Blazers up front, scoring two goals to propel the team to a 4-0 win against then-No. 24 VCU. It matched the most goals he had scored in a single game. The Santiago, Chile native followed up that performance with a goal and assist in the squad’s 5-1 victory against High Point.
Charlotte’s Klay Davis earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades after posting his 21st shutout of his career in the 49ers’ victory against Denver.
Navarrete and the UAB men’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 6 when they host Indiana, the 2012 national champions, in their home opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at West Campus Field.
